On Thursday, North Korea claimed to have tested a new type of “tactical guided weapon,” as diplomatic talks between the United States and the hermit nation faltered further.

The test did not appear to be of a banned mid-or-long-range ballistic missile, which would have thwarted all future negotiations with the United States. However, it does appear as though North Korea is attempting to threaten change regarding certain aspects of the talks.

Kim Jung Un observed the unspecified weapon being fired Wednesday by the Academy of Defense Science, the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said. In response to the launch Kim Jung Un said; “the development of the weapon system serves as an event of very weighty significance in increasing the combat power of the People’s Army.”

In addition to conducting testing of a ‘tactically guided missile,’ the Communist regime is requesting that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo be removed from negotiations. Further, there is also speculation that rail cars have appeared at the Yongbyon nuclear facility, and it appears as though they are bringing in fissile material.

The regime expressed concern regarding Pompeo and further said that the Secretary of State downplayed the significance of comments by North Korea to request that Washington has until the end of the year to offer mutually acceptable terms for an agreement to salvage the high-level talks.

In a statement issued under the name of Kwon Jong Gun, director general of the American Affairs Department at Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry, North Korea accused Pompeo of “talking nonsense” and misrepresenting Kim’s comments.

During a speech at Texas A&M on Monday, Pompeo said Kim promised to denuclearize during his first summit with President Donald Trump and that U.S. officials were working with the North Koreans to “chart a path forward so we can get there.”

“He (Kim) said he wanted it done by the end of the year,” Pompeo said. “I’d love to see that done sooner.”

To further complicate the negotiations; North Korea and Russia are also set to meet for the first time as Russia seeks to extend its influence into the hermit state. The two nations were once joined diplomatically, during the Cold War; now, as they reignite their alliance, Russia could play a role in thwarting the diplomatic efforts by the United States.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this week that preparations were underway for a meeting, while Russian and South Korean newspapers said the pair might meet next week in Vladivostok, Russia’s Far East, as Putin makes his way to a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.
