Five Democratic Socialists, potentially six, were elected to City Council in February for alderman, in Chicago. Their victories are apart of an emerging trend all across America, the return of Socialism.

The United States is currently undergoing a shift in politics, one that includes a drastic shift to the left. Democratic Socialists of America, an organization that backs persons like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and played a significant role in the Midterm Elections, aided in bringing five democratic socialists to city hall.

The trend in Chicago is part of a broader shift nationwide; in fact, during Midterms approximately forty Democratic Socialists were elected nationwide, marking “the rebirth of the American socialist movement after generations in retreat.”

Nearly all of the candidates who won nationwide were backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, who said regarding their victories; “Each of these candidates ran against corporate-backed Republican or Democratic political establishments on inspiring platforms demanding an end to austerity and oppression,” the group said in a statement. “We are building a pipeline from local positions all the way to national politics.

In Chicago, Carlos Ramirez Rosa won re-election in the 35th Ward and in the 1st Ward, Daniel La Spata defeated veteran Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno.

Andre Vasquez beat out Ald. Patrick O’Connor, who was Mayor Emanuel’s floor leader. O’Connor also was named the chairman of the powerful Finance Committee after Ald. Ed Burke was indicted on federal corruption charges.

In the 20th Ward, Jeanette Tayor, who was also endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, easily won her runoff, and finally, Byron Sigcho-Lopez won his runoff in the 25th Ward.

The return of Socialism is gaining ground nationwide, and while it is in its early stages of ‘rebirth,’ it is evident that over the next several years, the conservative fight against the tyrannical political ideology is just beginning.
